Organisations / Organizations
The generic .org TLD is intended for use by groups and individuals and is one of the original domains, dating back to January 1985. This, however, may be interpreted in a broad range of contexts, eg: business organisation, informal groups, non profit and charity use, or even single issue lobbying and pressure groups. Names may be readily registered by a person or company. Names may be transferred without difficulty between accounts at registrar and between regstrars.
Although organizations anywhere in the world can register .org domains, many countries provide a second-level domain with a similar purpose under their own country code TLD, an example being the UK with .org.uk
The registry operation was awarded by ICANN to Public Internet Registry after Verisign's operations agreement expired at the end of 2001
