The generic .info TLD is intended for open use by any individual, business, formal or informal group. Short for 'information' the term can be interpreted in a broad range of contexts, eg: business info, personal info, group info, product info etc etc. Names may be registered by a person, company or corporation and .info registrations have been prolific in recent years. Much of this may be ascribed to the existence of various subsidised registration offers over the years, which allowed .infos to be secured for little or no money. Its naturally descriptive and easily understandable significance, however, ensure that it is still an appropriate and resepctable domain for many successfully operating websites. Names may be transferred without difficulty between accounts at registrar and between regstrars. The registrty operation was awarded by ICANN to Afilias and it opened to the public at the start of October 2001
