Second Level
- .com.au - Commercial entities
- .net.au - Commercial entities (traditionally only ISPs, but now has broader use)
- .org.au - Associations and not-for-profit organisations (traditionally intended for organisations that did not fit in other categories)
- .edu.au - Educational Institutions (see Third Level)
- .gov.au - Government and its associated departments (see Third-Level)
- .csiro.au - CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation)
- .asn.au - Associations and not-for-profit organisations
- .id.au - Individuals (real or aliased name)
- .act.au - Australian Capital Territory
- .nsw.au - New South Wales

Third Level
For the .edu.au and .gov.au second level, the new geographic codes also apply creating third level domains such as .nsw.edu.au and .tas.gov.au and these are administered by the appropriate local body
